🚀 A New Era of Trade Between Mozambique and Eswatini Begins!

Business Eswatini

Mbabane & Maputo, June 2025 – A landmark Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Interfreight Pty Ltd (Eswatini) and CLM (Mozambique), officially launching a strategic trade corridor set to transform regional commerce within the SADC bloc.

🔗 Unlocking Regional Connectivity

By combining Eswatini’s established inland logistics network courtesy of Interfreight, a logistics leader since 1980 based in Mbabane with Mozambique’s maritime access via the ports of Maputo and Beira, the corridor is poised to significantly enhance trade efficiencies. The coalition builds on the historical Maputo Corridor, a successful integration of road, rail, and port investments linking Swaziland (now Eswatini) with Mozambique’s ports.

🌍 Economic Boost Through Public-Private Synergy

With backing from both governments, this corridor effort is not just a commercial venture it’s a regional development strategy. Eswatini’s Commerce Ministry recently urged businesses to seize opportunities by linking Mozambique’s port infrastructure with Eswatini’s logistics strengths, highlighting potential in sectors like agro-processing, textiles, tourism, and more.

📈 What's At Stake

  • Job Creation & Market Expansion: New trade routes mean fresh business openings from logistics roles to manufacturing and hospitality.

  • Border & Logistics Efficiency: The corridor will prioritize border post upgrades and streamlined customs processes to reduce delays and costs key asks from private sector leaders.

  • Strengthening SADC Trade Flows: As part of the SADC Trans‑Regional Corridors initiative, this project enhances intra‑Southern Africa trade by linking inland economies to key maritime gateways aligning with wider infrastructure targets.

🏗️ Visionary Scale & Long-term Outlook

Both Interfreight and CLM bring seasoned expertise to this partnership. Interfreight, with over four decades in operations, commands respect in regional freight transport. Mozambique has a robust port and railway system managed by Mozambique Ports and Railways (CFM), including vital links like the Goba Railway that reaches Eswatini directly.

Coupled with strong public-private engagement and support under the SADC Trade Protocol (in effect since 2000), the corridor is well-positioned to overcome historical bottlenecks, particularly at border posts and outdated transport infrastructure—helping Eswatini diversify beyond its South Africa dependency.

👍 A Win for the Region

In short, this MoU is more than paper it’s a catalyst for:

  • Economic diversification

  • Job creation

  • Faster, cheaper trade routes

  • Aligned regional infrastructure

Thanks to visionary leadership and genuine public-private collaboration, both Eswatini and Mozambique are stepping into a brighter economic future that benefits their citizens and the wider SADC community.

🎯 Looking Ahead

Next steps include:

  • Operationalizing logistics structures through joint Interfreight–CLM frameworks

  • Infrastructure upgrades at border crossings and corridor links

  • Public sector facilitation, including streamlined customs and border hours

  • Monitoring & scalability, expanding to other corridors within SADC

This transformative project embodies the SADC spirit: collaborative, ambitious, and people-centric. A bold new chapter is opening—where shared prosperity drives regional integration and growth.

💸 From Dirt Roads to Digital Wallets: How MoMo Is Revolutionizing Farming in Eswatini

What started as a simple mobile money platform is now powering a quiet financial revolution in Eswatini’s farmlands.

MTN Eswatini’s Mobile Money (MoMo) isn’t just about paying bills or sending cash to Grandma anymore. For the past 12 years, it’s been laying the groundwork for something bigger and farmers are finally catching on.

At a recent session that initially aimed to bridge the information gap, one unexpected headline stole the show: MoMo is becoming the farmer’s new best friend.

Think less tractor, more transaction.

Farmers are now using the app to:

💰 Get paid instantly for their harvest

🧪 Buy fertilizers and farming inputs without leaving the field

📈 Access microloans that help scale their operations

📊 Manage cash flow with tools designed for serious growth

“MoMo offers farmers a secure and convenient way to transact,” said Lomkhosi Dludlu of MTN Eswatini. “Whether it’s purchasing inputs or receiving payments, it’s all about speed, safety, and scale.”

Even better? MoMo supports bulk payments, a game-changer for co-ops and commercial growers who used to rely on cash-in-hand methods that were slow, risky, and often… messy.

Bottom line: Eswatini’s farmers aren’t just growing crops they’re growing smarter. And thanks to MoMo, they’ve got a financial engine in their pocket.
