Eswatini’s Inflation Takes a Breather, Hits 3.2% in May

Good news from Eswatini: consumer inflation is chilling out for the fourth month straight, clocking in at 3.2% in May 2025, per the Central Bank’s Monday economic update. That’s a slight dip from April, and it’s got folks paying attention.

What’s driving the cooldown? Slower price hikes in food, education, clothing, and footwear. Food inflation matched the headline rate of 3.2%, thanks to lower prices for bread, meat, and sugar. School costs, especially for secondary and tertiary education, also took a step back. But don’t pop the champagne yet, transport and hospitality prices are still creeping up, keeping things from cooling off too much.

Money moves: The Central Bank’s feeling generous, trimming the prime lending rate to 10.25% and the discount rate to 6.75% in May. This comes as credit activity picks up steam, hinting at some monetary maneuvering behind the scenes.

Month-over-month vibes: Inflation eased to a barely-there 0.1% in May, down from a spicier 0.9% in April. Looks like Eswatini’s economy is finding its groove for now.

Eswatini’s New Textile Hub: Turning Waste into Wealth

CONCO Limited Eswatini just teamed up with Business Women Eswatini (BWE) to drop some serious goodwill, donating sewing machines to a slick new textile factory in Lobamba Lomdzala under the Vukani BoMake programme. This isn’t your average ribbon-cutting; think state-of-the-art, purpose-built, and the 14th facility since 2020, leaving its container-converted predecessors in the dust.

The grand opening was a vibe, with bigwigs from business, government, and the community cheering on. CONCO’s General Manager Muzi Mahlobo didn’t hold back, saying this isn’t just about jobs but about “building shared value” through sustainable development, empowering women, youth, and people with disabilities, and going green. It’s all part of the Coca-Cola ecosystem’s community glow-up, focusing on youth, women, and the planet.

The factory’s set to train and employ over 20 rural women, youth, and folks with disabilities in sewing, crocheting, and textile production, using recycled fabric waste from local factories. It’s a win-win: less landfill junk, more income, and skills for the community. BWE’s Chairperson Tokky Hou shared the origin story born during the COVID-19 chaos when hospitals ran out of baby clothes, and her team turned textile scraps into garments. “That showed us the potential of waste and the potential of women,” she said. Talk about making something from nothing.

This waste-to-wealth model is BWE’s vision for a circular economy, churning out school uniforms, household goods, and fashion items from reused materials. Bonus: For every chunk of fabric recycled, they’re planting trees to green up the area. Business Eswatini’s President Mvuselelo Fakudze called it a shining example of public-private partnerships tackling socioeconomic challenges. “This is what happens when businesses invest with purpose,” he said.
