Zipper King's Secret Sauce: Why YKK is Sticking Around in Eswatini for 50 Years

You know YKK, right? Those three letters on basically every zipper you've ever owned? Well, the world's largest zipper manufacturer isn't just operating in Eswatini – they're about to celebrate 50 years of continuous business in the Kingdom. Think about that for a second. In a global economy, what is Eswatini doing right to keep this behemoth happy and invested?

Since 1976, YKK has been consistently pouring resources into the Matsapha area: factories, machinery, staff – the works. And they're pleased with their long-term bet.

Speaking at the ongoing World Expo in Osaka, Japan, YKK's Industrial & Human Resources Manager, Simon Magagula, spilled the beans on why Eswatini is such an attractive hub for investors.

1. Smart People, Ready to Work

First up? A highly literate population. Magagula highlighted Eswatini's impressive 87% literacy rate, which puts it at number 8 on the entire African continent. "This skilled workforce is essential for manufacturing operations and has come in handy for the company," he noted. Translation: YKK isn't struggling to find capable hands.

2. A Business Climate That's Hard to Beat

Next, Magagula pointed to a business environment that's practically unparalleled on the continent. "The country has been recognized for its favourable business climate, ranking first in Africa for 'Trading Across Borders,' according to the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index." Plus, Eswatini boasts low levels of labor disputes, creating a stable, predictable operational environment. For a manufacturer, that's pure gold.

3. Leaner Labor Costs

Another massive win for YKK? Competitive labor costs. Magagula revealed that labor expenses in Eswatini are roughly 20% lower than in neighboring South Africa. That's a significant cost advantage for any manufacturing operation looking to keep its bottom line healthy.

4. Infrastructure That Delivers (Literally)

Even though Eswatini is landlocked, Magagula, a YKK veteran of over two decades, praised the government's heavy investment in infrastructure. The country boasts an extensive road network (3,594 km!) and a 301 km cargo rail system that links directly to major ports like Durban and Richards Bay in South Africa. And let's not forget the state-of-the-art international airport, opened in 2014, boosting logistics for exports.

5. Sweetening the Deal: Incentives & AGOA

Beyond the fundamentals, Eswatini offers some juicy investment incentives. We're talking a reduced tax rate of 10% for ten years on approved projects, plus exemptions from withholding taxes on dividends during that same period.

For a company like YKK, there is the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Eswatini's eligibility means duty-free access to the massive U.S. market for certain products. That's a huge leg up for local manufacturers eyeing international expansion, especially in the textiles and agro-processed goods sectors.

The Bottom Line: YKK's half-century run in Eswatini isn't an accident. It's a testament to a strategic blend of human capital, a stable business environment, cost advantages, robust infrastructure, and smart government incentives. If you're an investor looking for a place to set up shop and thrive for decades, Eswatini just made a very compelling case.
